Beginning Lessons

Lee Maddocks, one of the very top players in Modesto, is giving $10 bridge lessons on at our McHenry Bowl home every Tuesday at 10. These lessons cover are suitable for beginning and intermediate players. He is a very experienced teacher and is very skillful in explaining bridge to beginners. He is going to teach a system called Two over One, which is very similar to Standard American with a few differences that should make it easier to play than the usual Standard American system.

A Note from Lee:

Greetings from Modesto. Learning bridge is a challenging task. It is food for your mind, and if you undertake the effort, you will be rewarded.

Learning the Game: You tube has some great resources about the game, and the first thing you might think about is to watch a few videos to familiarize yourself with the object of the game and the rules.

Practicing: FREE on Bridge Base On-Line. you no longer need four people to play because you can practice with robots, or with a group of up to 8 friends. If you have a friend that wants to play, you and your friend can start a table for four that includes 2 robots. As you improve, we would encourage you to join our club, and play with other people from the area. You will receive masterpoints as you play, and can achieve ACBL rankings as you improve.

Drills: My lessons are not designed to teach you the fundamentals. Many beginning bridge books have been written that will introduce you to bidding. I have designed a series of quizzes to practice bidding without competition in the auction. My theory is based on a book written by Alfred Sheinwold, popular in the 1950’s, who used similar drills to reinforce subtle bidding differences. When learning math concepts, practicing different problems is a good way to learn concepts, and I believe the same goes for bridge bidding. Each of the following quizzes are designed to test an understanding of basic bridge bidding concepts.
